"The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."
– M. Scott Peck

Couples Counselling

The majority of people who decide to work with a psychologist do so to address relationship issues. Given that the chance of a first marriage ending in divorce over a 40 year period is 67% and that half of all divorces occur in the first seven years of marriage, that is not surprising.

The average couple waits six years before seeking help for relationship problems which according to the statistics is too long. However, if both partners are committed to making changes, couples counselling can be very successful.

Tanja’s approach to working with couples is based upon the work of Dr. John Gottman, founder of The Gottman Institute, who has been doing research in this field for over 20 years. She utilizes a combination of couple and individual sessions designed to help partners rediscover the positive feelings that first attracted them to each other.

If you and your partner choose to work with Tanja the counselling will consist of three phases:

    1) An assessment that will identify the areas in your relationship which need to be addressed
    2) A combination of individual and couple sessions that will teach you how to recognize the signs of relationship disintegration and what to do about them
    3) A focus on creating a shared idea of the relationship and how to achieve that vision
